All-American Hamburgers Recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 slices American or cheddar cheese, halved diagonally
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese, halved diagonally
  • 4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
  • Lettuce leaves, sliced tomato and onion, cooked bacon, ketchup and mustard, optional

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the first four ingredients. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into four patties.
  • Grill, covered, over medium heat for 6 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer reads 160° and juices run clear.
  • During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with two triangles of American cheese and one triangle of Swiss cheese. Serve on buns with the lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, ketchup and mustard if desired.

How to make American Pancakes

American pancakes differ from most other pancakes in that a raising agent is used. This is a simple, basic recipe for how to make American style pancakes. and is very, very simple.
Basic American pancake mix  ingredients:
  • 1 ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup castor sugar
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • A pinch of salt
how to make american pancakesSimple. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl, break the egg in to the dry mix and stir with a fork. Now add the buttermilk and oil and stir with the fork again. Lumpy is not a problem – it will add to the texture. Heat a little vegetable oil or butter in a cast iron skillet and when the oil is hot, pour in a little mixture. You can make them any size from dollar pancakes to full skillet size – the larger ones will take slightly longer to cook.
Cooking time will be around three minutes a side – cook until golden brown. Serve with butter and Maple syrup.

 American Buttermilk Biscuit

  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk, chilled
This is a favourite biscuit recipes. Be sure not to knead the dough too much – less is better in this case. It may be a little lumpy, but that is all to the good. Hmm hmm – serve this with sausage gravy and fried eggs.


How to make American Buttermilk Biscuits:

Preheat oven to 450F, 230C. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a big mixing bowl. Using your fingertips, rub butter and shortening into dry ingredients until mixture looks like crumbs, mixing as fast as possible, before the fats melt.  Make a well in the center and pour in the chilled buttermilk. Stir just until the dough comes together. The dough will be very sticky. Turn dough onto floured surface, dust top with flour and gently fold dough over on itself 5 or 6 times. Press into a 1-inch thick round. Cut out biscuits with a 2-inch cutter, being sure to push straight down through the dough. Place biscuits on baking sheet so that they just touch. Reform scrap dough, working it as little as possible and continue cutting. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
